Weeping Tile Installation Edmonton
Proper perimeter drainage is the foundation of any long-term waterproofing strategy. We install exterior weeping tile systems that intercept groundwater before it reaches your foundation walls, preventing hydrostatic pressure buildup and basement water intrusion.
Why Drainage Fails Around Edmonton Foundations
Edmonton's clay-heavy soils absorb and retain moisture exceptionally well — which is precisely the problem. Water that saturates the soil around a foundation has nowhere to go. It builds pressure against foundation walls, finds cracks and gaps, and works its way into basements. Without a functioning drainage system at the footing level, waterproofing membranes alone are not a permanent solution.
Common Causes in Edmonton
- Original weeping tile systems failing after 30–50 years — common in Edmonton's older housing stock
- Clay soil that retains moisture and creates persistent hydrostatic pressure
- Collapsed, crushed, or root-infiltrated perforated pipe
- Inadequate slope in existing drainage systems causing standing water
- Grading changes over time that direct surface water toward the foundation
- Heavy snowmelt and spring runoff overwhelming drainage capacity
- Properties built without weeping tile or with substandard original installation
Exterior Weeping Tile Installation Process
Full Perimeter Excavation
We excavate to the footing level around the affected perimeter. This exposes the existing drainage system for assessment and gives us full access to install new tile correctly.
Old System Removal
Failed clay tile or crushed perforated pipe is removed completely. Leaving failed components in place compromises the new installation.
Drainage Tile Installation
New perforated pipe is installed at the base of the footing on a clean gravel bed. The pipe is wrapped in filter fabric to prevent clay migration and clogging — a critical detail in Edmonton's clay soil conditions.
Waterproofing Membrane Application
With the wall exposed, we apply a waterproofing membrane to the exterior foundation wall before backfilling — adding a secondary layer of protection against moisture penetration.
Clean Stone Backfill
The excavation is backfilled with clean drainage stone around the tile, promoting free water movement to the pipe. Proper compaction and grading are completed to direct surface water away from the foundation.
Outlet Connection
Drainage tile is connected to a suitable outlet — storm sewer, sump pit, or daylight outlet — ensuring collected water has a clear and unobstructed path away from the structure.
Why This Matters
Weeping tile is not a supplementary feature — it is the primary defense against the groundwater pressure that causes most basement water problems. Homes without functioning perimeter drainage rely entirely on foundation walls to resist hydrostatic pressure. Over time, even solid poured concrete walls develop cracks under that sustained load. A properly installed exterior weeping tile system removes the pressure before it becomes a structural concern.
